Our June Kidical Mass ride took us on a tour of a number of Little Free Libraries in our community, where children got to take a book, leave a book, or share a book. Biking is a perfect mode of transportation for exploring these neighborhood gems. We were able to cover more mileage than we would have on foot and visit three Little Free Libraries within a three mile radius of our start and end point. And unlike with driving, we could pull right up to the Little Free Library, hope off our bikes, browse the book selection, and ride on.
We ended our library tour with a story time reading of Bear on a Bike in the park. My friend S, who runs our local Children’s Book Club, co-hosted the event with us and organized the story time and snack break at Bandshell Park. Because we read about a bear riding a bike, we encouraged kids to bring their own bear or stuffed animal along for a picnic during which we made and ate a yummy bear-themed snack.
Below are a few snapshots from this summer’s Books and Bikes ride, which was just as much fun as last summer’s ride. We look forward to continuing this yearly event in the summers to come! Especially since we’ve noticed a few new Little Free Libraries pop up in our community, giving us no shortage of destinations.
Thanks to everyone who came out for the ride! Enjoy the photos below:
